NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Freshman Zieandrea Bridges set a school record and Ali Meister recorded an indoor personal-best mark to lead UAB on day one of the Vanderbilt Invitational.
Bridges turned in a distance of 41-08.50 in the weight throw on her way to a 27th place finish in the event. Bridges set a freshman school record in the shot put earlier in the year with a mark of 39-01.25 at the Birmingham-Southern Icebreaker.
Fellow freshman Aisha Nelson also had a strong showing in field events on day one, finishing in 12th place in the high jump with a height of 5-05.25. Meister leaped to a distance of 17-10.25 in the long jump en route to a 23rd place finish.
“We only competed in a few events tonight because of how many athletes we have going tomorrow,” UAB head coach Kurt Thomas said. We still have some work to do in other events before we reach the Conference USA Championships, but I liked what I saw from Aisha and Ali tonight and I expect to see some good things tomorrow as well.”
Day two of the meet is scheduled to begin Saturday morning at 11 a.m. with the shot put.
