UAB Set to Host Two Meets this Weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB track and field team continues its indoor schedule this weekend when the Blazers host the UAB Blazer Invitational on Friday and the UAB Vulcan Invitational on Saturday. Both meets will take place downtown at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Competition begins Friday at 11 a.m. with the men’s and women’s mile run and the women’s high jump. The men’s and women’s 4x400 meter relay is the final event of the day and is schedule to start at 5:30 p.m.
In addition to UAB, the Blazer Invitational will feature North Carolina A&T, New Orleans, Georgia State, Jackson State, Bethune-Cookman, Georgia, Savannah State, Kennesaw State, USF, Alabama State, Samford, Troy, Meridian Community College, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Florida State, Florida A&M and Southern University.
The men’s and women’s 5000 meter run will be the opening event Saturday at the UAB Vulcan Invite. Field events begin at 10 a.m. with the women’s weight throw, long jump and pole vault. The men’s shot put, long jump and high jump will also start at 10 a.m. The schedule of events concludes at 5:45 p.m. when the men’s and women’s 4x400 meter relay.
Teams from all over the southeast, including Jacksonville State, West Alabama, Montevallo, Johnson C. Smith, New Orleans, Georgia State, Bethune-Cookman, Savannah State, Kennesaw State, North Carolina A&T, Jackson State, Florida State, Florida A&M, Southern, Mississippi Valley State, Webber International and Belhaven.
“We are always excited and honored to be able to host the UAB Blazer Invitational and the Vulcan Invitational,” UAB head coach Kurt Thomas said. “This meet has become known as a quality season opening meet for many teams and professionals, so this is a great meet for us to test ourselves after the new year. We want to see the ladies come out and compete hard and execute events well. That will build the basis for the rest of the indoor season and help towards outdoor.”
