UAB Volleyball Announces 2015 Schedule

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The 2015 UAB volleyball schedule is highlighted by two home tournaments and 17 home matches, head coach Kerry Messersmith announced on Monday.
“Our non-conference schedule will not be as challenging as we have had in past seasons,” Messersmith said. “It definitely has some highlights for us, though, and will be a nice test for us before we move into Conference USA play. We are really excited to be hosting two of the four tournaments we are competing in. With those two tournaments and our conference slate we will host 17 home matches, which will be a huge benefit for us.”
UAB will begin the season with its first four games on the road. The Blazers open at the Lamar University Tournament with games against Marist and host Lamar on Friday, Aug. 28 and Texas Southern on Saturday, Aug. 29. Then they travel to Troy, Ala. to take on the Trojans on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
The home opener will come on Sept. 4 against C-USA foe FIU in the first match of the Blazer Classic. UAB will also play Savannah State and Austin Peay on Saturday, Sept. 5 in its first home tournament.
After that the Blazers have a five-match road stint with the Scenic City Showdown (Sept. 11-12), which features matches against tournament-host Chattanooga, Austin Peay and Gardner-Webb, in between two C-USA mid-week matches. UAB will take on North Texas on Monday, Sept. 7 and Middle Tennessee on Wednesday, Sept. 16.
That will lead into the second home tournament of the season, the Hal Messersmith Memorial Invitational, Sept. 18-19. The inaugural tournament will feature UMass Lowell, Ole Miss, Mississippi Valley and Jacksonville State.
UAB will host three more non-conference matches with Louisiana-Monroe on Sept. 21, and in-state foes Alabama A&M (Oct. 13) and Alabama State (Nov. 10).
The Conference USA home state will feature Charlotte (Sept. 27), UTSA (Oct. 2), Southern Miss (Oct. 4), Florida Atlantic (Oct. 16), Marshall (Oct. 30), Middle Tennessee (Nov. 1) and Rice (Nov. 14).
The Blazers will be on the road for conference games at Marshall (Oct. 9), Louisiana Tech (Oct. 11), WKU (Oct. 23), Southern Miss (Oct. 25), UTEP (Nov. 6) and UTSA (Nov. 8).
The 2015 Conference USA tournament will be hosted by UTSA in San Antonio, Texas and will take place Friday-Sunday, Nov. 20-22.
