BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB softball team fell to the No. 6/7 Alabama Crimson Tide, 10-0, in five innings Tuesday night at UAB Softball Field.
The matchup was the first of two midweek contests against in-state Southeastern Conference foes, as UAB (24-11) will travel to Auburn (37-5) Wednesday night for a game at 5:30 p.m. CT.
Megan Smith (11-6) was charged with the loss in her 16th start of the season after allowing the game's first two runs on three hits and a walk in 2.1 innings pitched. Leslie Jury (6-3) was the winning pitcher for Alabama (30-9) after shutting out UAB over the full five innings, allowing two hits with three strikeouts.
UAB's two hits came from Amy Dennis and Ashley Johnson. Caitlin Attfield's nine-game hitting streak was snapped, as she went without a hit for only the fifth time this season.
Alabama put its first three runs on the board on a pair of home runs. The first two came in the top of the third on a two-run home run from Danae Hays, scoring the lead runner, Haylie McCleney, who reached first on a single up the middle. The Crimson Tide extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth on a solo home run from Jadyn Spencer.
Alabama scored the bulk of its runs in the top of the fifth, as the Crimson Tide brought seven runs across the plate. After leadoff walks by McCleney and Hays, Marisa Runyon singled to right to score both, and was plated by Chaunsey Bell on a two-run home run.
After Bell's home run cleared the bases, the Crimson Tide set up runners on first and second on Danielle Richard and Andrea Hawkins singles. Chandler Dare followed by driving in both on a two-run triple, and Hays drove home the final run of the inning on a double to close the top of the fifth with a 10-0 lead.
UAB was unable to manufacture any offense in the bottom of the frame, and fell to the Crimson Tide by run rule in five innings.
