AUBURN, Ala. -- The UAB softball team fell to the No. 7/6 Auburn Tigers, 10-6, Wednesday night at Jane B. Moore Field.
The two teams combined for 20 hits, as UAB (24-12) recorded eight, while Auburn (38-5) posted 12. All eight of the Blazers' hits came on individual multiple-hit games, as Caitlin Attfield, Sara Beth Williamson, Hayley Davis and Amy Dennis had two runs apiece.
Davis finished the game with four runs batted in, while each of Williamson and Kelly Britt tallied an RBI.
Cara Goodwin (10-3) was charged with the loss for UAB after allowing the game's first five runs in the first 1.2 innings. Freshmen Becky Fox and Megan Smith combined for the final 4.1 innings pitched, allowing five runs over that period.
The winning pitcher for Auburn was Marcy Harper (8-2), who allowed three runs on three hits and two walks in her three-inning start.
Auburn took the game's first lead at 2-0 after a home run in the bottom of the first frame. The lead runner, Emily Carosone, reached after being hit by pitch and was driven in on a two-run homer to right by Kasey Cooper.
The Tigers extended their lead to five runs with a three-run home run in the bottom of the second. After Courtney Shea and Kelsey Bogaards reached on a double and walk, respectively, Carosone hit a home run to right center to clear the bases and give Auburn a 5-0 lead.
UAB carved into the Auburn lead with three runs in the top of the third. Dennis and Attfield led off with singles, and Williamson followed with a walk to load the bases. Davis plated the first two runners on a double to the right-center gap, and Kelly Britt hit a sacrifice fly to center to drive in the third and cut the deficit to 5-3.
Auburn pushed its lead to four runs in the bottom of the fourth with its third home run of the game. Tiffany Howard set the table with a leadoff single, and Cooper drove her second home run of the game over the wall in left center to put Auburn up, 7-3.
Auburn tallied its eighth run in the bottom of the fifth on a one-out, bases-loaded walk. Following the tally, the Blazers turned the ball over to Megan Smith, who induced a popout and strikeout to get out of the jam. The Tigers added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 10-3 on a Janna Abbott pinch-hit two-run single.
UAB tallied three runs in the seventh to cap the game's scoring. Attfield led off the seventh with a stand-up double, and Williamson followed with another stand-up double to plate her from second. Davis followed by sending a no-doubt home run off the scoreboard in left to drive home two more, but UAB could not manufacture any offense from there. The Blazers' seventh-inning rally fell short, and UAB suffered a 10-6 loss to Auburn.
The UAB softball team returns to action on Saturday, April 11, for a three-game Conference USA set versus the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. First pitch for both of Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's series finale is set for 1 p.m. CT at UAB Softball Field.
