BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- After a rain delay for nearly two hours, the UAB baseball team fell to Alabama, 7-2, Tuesday night at Regions Field.
"Our pitching staff has been outstanding, as evidenced all year, especially in this six-game win streak," head coach Brian Shoop said. "They're human, they're not going to do it every single game. I think we walked and hit 10 tonight and that's going to be a bad night, and Alabama did a good job taking advantage of that. I was really impressed with Alabama's bullpen."
Dylan Munger got the start for UAB, his second of the season after returning from injury the last two years, and tossed 1.2 frames with just two hits allowed. He then gave way to the Blazer bullpen, which allowed six walks and hit three Alabama hitters, totaling a 4-run fifth for the Tide which sealed the win.
Offensively for UAB (17-10), Mitch Williams and Adam Smith drove in one run each, as the Blazers totaled five hits. Alabama's pitching staff totaled nine strikeouts, including four from starter Jake Walters.
A combined 13 pitchers were used in the marathon that lasted until nearly midnight in Birmingham. Alabama's Nick Eicholtz got the win, while Thomas Lowery was tagged with the loss.
Defensively, UAB turned two more double plays, bringing its total to 31 on the year, a category the Green and Gold ranked 17th in the NCAA in entering Tuesday night.
The Blazers return to the field Thursday to open up a three-game Conference USA set at Southern Miss in Hattiesburg.
