MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The UAB softball team got a complete game from sophomore righty Madison Hir and 13 hits from the offense en route to a 5-2 victory over the Wichita State Shockers on Saturday from the Madeira Beach Athletic Complex.
UAB (7-5) will play its second game of the day at 5:30 p.m. CT, matching up with the Harvard Crimson.
Hir (2-0) went the distance for the Blazers, holding Wichita State to two runs (none earned) on four hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Katie Malone (2-2) was charged with the loss for the Shockers.
The Blazers got multiple-hit games from Caitlin Attfield, JoJo Fallen, Kelly Britt, Amy Dennis, Anna Theriot and Sara Beth Williamson, who went 3-for-3 with a double and a walk.
Two runs were driven in by each of Fallen and Dennis, with Dennis driving in the first run of the game on a solo home run in the second.
The next UAB scoring inning came in the third. Williamson and Britt led off the inning with singles, and were moved up to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Johnson. Dennis followed with a single to right center, picking up her other RBI as Williamson crossed the plate. A throw in from the outfield on the play was muffed by the pitcher, allowing Britt to score, and extending the UAB lead to 3-0.
Wichita State got a pair of runs back in the sixth after reaching first and third on a pair of errors. A single through the left side by the Shockers’ Liz Broyles plated both to cut the lead to 3-2.
The final scoring inning came in the bottom of the sixth, in which the Blazers tacked on another pair of runs. Hayley Davis was hit by pitch in a pinch-hitting opportunity, and moved to third on an Attfield double. Fallen finished off the scoring inning with a single up the middle to plate both, capping the scoring at 5-2.
Hir got each Wichita State batter in order in the top of the seventh, sealing UAB’s seventh win of the year.
