BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB track and field team opens its 2015-16 indoor season Friday at 9 a.m. when the Blazers compete at the Birmingham-Southern Indoor Icebreaker from the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Twenty teams are scheduled to compete in the event, including six from the state of Alabama, two from the SEC and one from the ACC.
Field events begin at 9 a.m. with the weight throw and the long jump, while running events kick off at 9:30 a.m. with the 3000 meters.
“Our non-cross country student-athletes spend the majority of the fall training, and sometimes you need to sprint, jump and hurdle against real competition in a meet environment to really gauge where you stand as a team,” UAB head coach Kurt Thomas said. “We hope this meet will also provide our team with the motivation to continue training throughout the Christmas break.
“All of our jumpers have been training well, so we’re excited to see them long, triple, and high jump,” Thomas added. “Aisha Nelson is a very talented athlete, and we’re interested in seeing how she performs in the high jump at her first meet.”
Lucy Crookes enters the season as one of UAB’s top distance runners, as the 5-foot-10 senior earned All-Conference USA Second Team honors following a stellar 2015 cross country season.
“Lucy is healthy and running well, so having a quality race before the break will be key to her season,” Thomas said.
