Marshall Outlasts UAB Volleyball, 3-1

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Two Blazers recorded double-doubles, but the UAB volleyball team could not outlast Marshall as the Herd claimed a 3-1 victory Friday morning at the Cam Henderson Center.
Marshall (12-7, 3-3 C-USA) opened the first set with a 3-0 run before freshman Kassidy Sullivan notched her first kill of the day, but the Herd tallied five-straight points to lead 9-3.
UAB (7-14, 0-7 C-USA) moved within two points, 17-15, with aid of a Marshall attack error, but the Herd offense recovered to win the first set, 25-19.
Set two saw Marshall continue pressuring the UAB defense, but the Blazer kept the match close trailing only 12-11 at the midway point. The Marshall attack out powered UAB in the end to take set two, 25-19, and lead, 2-0, a the break.
UAB opened the fourth set with back-to-back points and pushed to an early 10-7 lead to force a Herd timeout. UAB recorded a 14-3 run to reach set point, but Marshall fought off eight-straight points before Gabby Deshotel punched the kill to win the set, 25-18.
A 5-0 run gave Marshall breathing room, 9-3, in the final set. UAB cut into the lead, 13-12, but the Blazers could not top the Herd and fell, 25-19.
Deshotel recorded her eighth double-double of the season with team-leading 21 kills and 16 digs. The outside hitter now sits at 339 kills for the year, a new season high for the junior.
Sullivan recorded a breakout performance against the Herd, setting new career highs with seven kills and a .636 clip, which led all Blazers in the match. Junior Amy Hunter also contributed seven kills to the UAB offense.
Setter Amber Treace notched her fourth double-double of the season, dishing out 37 helpers and 11 digs. Junior Emma Schroer totaled 15 digs in the match at the libero position.
All Kiekover tallied 16 kills and a .583 clip to lead the Herd. Marshall closed the match with 54 total kills while attacking a team percentage of .306. UAB garnered 47 total kills with a .148 clip.
UAB continues its road stretch on Sunday as the Blazers travel to Louisiana Tech. First serve against the Lady Techsters is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
