LEXINGTON, Ky. - A late goal by the Wildcat offense gave No. 16 Kentucky a 1-0 victory over the UAB men's soccer team Wednesday night at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex.
"It feels like we are snake bit," head coach Mike Getman said. "We controlled the game for 83 minutes, our keeper didn't have to make a real save in the game and somehow they get one chance and it scores. Give Kentucky credit. They defended well and found a way to win the game."
After a scoreless 81 minutes of play, Kentucky's (9-3-1, 5-0-1 C-USA) Sam Miller got the rebound off an initial Joe Kuzminsky save and punched one in for the only score of the night.
UAB (5-9-0, 2-4 C-USA) got off just two shots in the opening period, but bounced back for a strong second-half performance, taking 10 shots to finish with 12, four of which were on target.
Senior Ian Svantesson took five with three on goal, while Ruiz also had one for the Green and Gold. Kuzminsky played well in goal for UAB, finishing with two saves, fending off 13 Kentucky shots.
The Blazers return to action Saturday night at Marshall with first kick set for 6 p.m.
The UAB men's and women's soccer teams will call BBVA Compass Field their new home, beginning with the 2016 season.
