HUNTINGTON, W. Va. -- The UAB men's soccer team netted a late goal to force overtime, but Marshall netted the golden goal in the 93rd minute to top the Blazers, 3-2, Saturday night at the Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
Marshall (6-8-1, 1-5-1-USA) struck early as Daniel Jodah poked a goal past redshirt junior Joe Kuzminsky in the 10th minute.
Kuzminsky recovered to make three saves in the first half to keep the Blazers (5-9-1, 1-5-1 C-USA) in striking distance as the Herd clung to its one-point advantage heading into the half.
Fourteen minutes into the second half, senior Ian Svantesson continued his tear on the pitch as the defender received a pass from junior Lars Willemse and hammered a score from the 10 yards out to lock the match at 1-all.
The goal was the eighth of the season for Svaentesson, who as now scored in four of the Blazers' last five matches.
The squads remained in a deadlock for much of the second half until Marshall broke through with three minutes remaining in regulation. Trevor Starcher pass the ball around a charging Kuzminsky to Rimario Gordon who netted his fifth goal of the season.
The Green and Gold answered mere seconds later as redshirt senior Karl Chester netted an unassisted goal, his fifth of the season, to force overtime at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
Matt Freeman buried the golden goal in the 93rd minute to lift Marshall over the UAB, 3-2. The Thundering Herd finished with 22 shots with 11 on target, while UAB put five of its 12 attempts on goal.
