BOX SCORE
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Two overtime periods were not enough to determine a winner, as the UAB women's soccer team tied Western Kentucky, 1-all, Sunday at West Campus Field.
"It was a tough match as we knew it was going to be," said head coach Harold Warren. "For one, it was a Sunday match, and both teams had tough matches against Middle Tennessee and Marshall on Friday night. Our girls showed a lot of character, heart and commitment. The decision could have gone either way, but we got through it with points. That was what we were striving for."
The Blazers (2-9-1, 1-3-1 C-USA) took an early lead off a header goal from senior Kasey Johnson in the 11th minute. The goal was the fifth of the season for the forward. Sophomore Rachel Green assisted on the score.
"Kasey is a goal scorer," said Warren. "It is what she does. She knows how to be at the right place at the right time, and she's aggressive on shots. She's a senior, and she wants to win. She wants to go out with a bang in her last season. Her mentality is strong, so we are going to keep going and push it to the next level."
The Blazer defense proved tough in the first half allowing just two shots from the Lady Hilltoppers (6-4-4, 2-2-2 C-USA) to give UAB the 1-0 advantage at the half.
WKU got on the board in the opening seconds of the second half off
The Lady Hilltoppers recorded 12 shots in the second half, but Daugherty proved tough with six saves to force overtime for the second consecutive match for UAB.
"Physically, it is difficult, but mentally, they were up for it," said Warren on the second overtime play of the weekend. "The girls were grinding, and that is what Sunday conference play is all about. I am extremely proud of them. They are sticking to what we are trying to do as a team."
UAB recorded four shots in the two overtime periods, but could not find the back of the net as Daugherty and the Blazer defense fought off five overtime shots to force the 1-all tie.
Johnson led the charge with one goal and three shots. Green totaled one shot and one assist against WKU while senior Paige Hanks totaled four shots. As the team, UAB garnered 16 shots with nine landing on goal.
WKU totaled 19 shots against the Blazers, but Daugherty defended the net with 10 saves.
UAB will travel to Old Dominion on Tuesday to play a rescheduled conference match. First kick against the Lady Monarchs is set for 7 p.m. CT.
