BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB softball team was selected by coaches as the co-favorite to win Conference USA, the league announced on Wednesday. The Blazers tied FIU in the polling, with the two teams receiving five votes apiece.
UAB is coming off five-consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, a streak held by only 23 teams nationally. The 2014 season included UAB's highest RPI ranking in program history, as the Blazers rose to No. 26 on March 31 following a sweep of conference foe North Texas.
UAB receives the benefit of the return of junior infielder Caitlin Attfield, who was named to the 2015 C-USA Softball Preseason Team. An All-Conference USA pick in each of her first two seasons, Attfield set single-season program records in batting average (.425), hits (88), total bases (120), on-base percentage (.473) and assists (140).
Including Attfield, UAB returns 15 players looking to build on last year's second-place Confernce USA finish. The Blazers return seven of nine regulars in the lineup, including Mary Warren, who slugged eight home runs in her freshman season.
