BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- UAB distance All-American Elinor Kirk has been named as the 2014 South Region Track Athlete of the Year, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coach Association (USTFCCCA) announced Monday from its office in New Orleans.
Kirk, who will wrap up her remarkable UAB career later this week at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., was one of nine regional track winners named.
Each of the regions, which are the same as those used during the Division I cross country season, honored both the men's and women's top track athletes and field athletes and the top men's and women's head coaches and assistant coaches. Award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches.
Kirk owns virtually every Blazers' indoor and outdoor distance record. She will enter Thursday's 10,000-meter run with the fastest collegiate time in the event this season at 32:17.05. She also had the best time in the 5K at the NCAA East Preliminary meet in Jacksonville, Fla. two weeks ago. Kirk will run in the NCAA 5K final on Saturday.
