Former UAB Track Star Wins Canadian Marathon

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Former UAB track All-American Rhiannon Johns recently won the women’s Canadian National Marathon Championship in Ottawa, Canada in Johns’ home territory.
Johns took the women’s national title this past weekend with a time of two hours 47 minutes and 11 seconds. The Sault Ste. Marie, Canada native was both an All-American on the track and an Academic All-American in the classroom for UAB. She held UAB outdoor records in the 5,000 and 10,000-meter runs, as well as the 5K indoor marks prior to this season.
She finished 12th in the 10K at the NCAA Championships in 2013 to cap her five-year career and also qualified for the finals in 2011 in the 5K. Just a season ago, she claimed a runner-up finish in the 5K at the Canadian Nationals with a time of 16:26.71.
In her very successful five-year stint in Birmingham, Johns was selected to the Conference USA All-Academic Team three times, she was a two-time C-USA champion in the 10K, and was a four-time recipient of the C-USA Academic Medal. She was also a three-time USTFCCCA All-Academic selection and was awarded Presidential Honors with a 4.0 GPA as an undergrad.
