Track & Field Opens Samford Meet with Success

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Shelby Barker and Akira McSwain combined for two first and second-place finishes in the pentathlon events Friday night at the Samford Multi & Invite to open the two-day meet at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Barker finished first in the 800-meter run with a 2:20.03 time. She finished ninth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.06 seconds, second in high jump with a 1.68m (5-6.00) leap, ninth in long jump with a 5.35m (17-6 ¾) and 21st in shot put with a 7.94m (26-0 ¾).
Akira McSwain took top honors in the shot put event with a 11.89m (39-0 ¼), seventh in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:30.52, second in the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.76 mark, fifth in the high jump with a 1.59m (5-2 ½) leap and 18th in the long jump with a 4.94m jump (16-2 ½).
Angel Watson took third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.51 seconds, while Alexis Bates finished 10th with a 24.74. Kyana White finished 19th with a 24.97 and Shakima Knox ran a 25.82 for a 55th-place finish.
As a team UAB topped Friday's team rankings with 14 total points. Action from the Samford Multi & Invite will continue Saturday morning at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
