Track and Field Concludes Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB track and field team opened its 2015 indoor season at the Birmingham-Southern Icebreaker on Friday at the Birmingham CrossPlex with a 10th-place finish out of 22 teams, tallying 34 points.
The Blazers began the day with a one-two finish in the 3,000-meter run by Lucy Crookes and Rebecca Evans. Crookes continued her momentum from the cross country season and crossed the line in first with a 9:45.21. Evans finished second in 10:10.96. Lauren Scott turned in a 10:50.51 and Allison Wortel ran an 11:34.83.
In the 60-meter hurdles, UAB qualified three runners in the finals. Renay Ransaw clocked a career-best 8.75 to take second place. Jessica Shelley's 8.77 took third-place honors while Autumnn Burnett tallied one point for the Green and Gold in sixth place with a time of 9.06.
Kandiss Briggs represented the Blazers in the 60-meter dash finals, crossing the line in 7.85 for sixth place. Kendra Gipson set a new career best with an 8.22 in her preliminary heat.
In the mile, Jenna Wesley was UAB's top finisher with a 5:26.06, good enough for seventh place. Laurie Pray ran a 5:53.12. to finish in fourth-place in her heat and 17th overall.
Transfer Ali Meister made her debut as a Blazer by leaping a career-best 4.88m (16-00 ¼) in the long jump. Meister also competed in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking a 9.50 in her preliminary heat.
Breona Humphrey led the Blazers in the 200-meter dash, clocking a 26.03 for 14th place.
UAB's day concluded in the shot put with Jimmeshia Wilder and JaCarey Heard. Wilder took 23rd with a throw of 7.43m (24-04 ½) and Heard followed in 26th with a mark of 6.81m (22-04 ¼).
