BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB football team took to the practice field Wednesday at Legion Field as Saturday's Conference USA contest with Southern Miss moved a day closer. The Blazers look to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2004 with a win over the Golden Eagles.
"I think we had to decompress first after the Marshall game, but we know the task at hand," said head coach Bill Clark. "It is a rivalry game this weekend and the team has moved on and focused pretty quickly."
Southern Miss enters the contest 3-8 this season with only one victory in C-USA play. Despite the record, the Golden Eagles have logged more than 365 offensive yards per game this season.
"Their quarterback got banged up a little bit, and this is a team that really beat UAB pretty good last season," Clark said. "In this conference, everyone is really close and very similar athletically, so you just have to come to play."
With class being out for Thanksgiving break this week, Clark and the Blazers utilized the extra time to come together as a team before this weekend's rivalry matchup.
"It really has been a lot easier on us," said Clark. "The guys go to study hall in the morning and at night, but other than that, we have had a chance to do some fun things. We have been able to eat some pizza and wings together, and it has been a little more laid back."
Saturday's game is scheduled to kick off at 2:30 p.m., and it will be televised on the American Sports Network and can be seen locally in Birmingham on WABM My68. Fans may also listen on the Blazer IMG Sports Network with David Crane (play-by-play), Steve Irvine (analyst) and Sam Miller (sideline reporter) on the call.
