Cross Country's Season Concludes At NCAA Regionals

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ---- The UAB cross country team wrapped up its 2014 campaign on Friday with an 18th-place finish at the NCAA South Regional at Apalachee Regional Park. Junior Lucy Crookes crossed the line in 26th place, turning in a career-best 20:30.6.
Crookes narrowly missed being considered for an individual at-large bid to the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 22. The top-25 runners from each region are considered for the 38 at-large selections. Crookes’ 20:30.6 was edged out by Florida Gator Rebakah Greene’s 20:30.2.
Freshman Rebecca Evans set a new career-best in the 6K, running a 21:02.9 to finish in 61st place. Sophomore Sarah Livett was the third UAB runner to cross the line, coming in 98th with a career-best 21:32.4, cutting nearly nine seconds off her previous best 21:41.24 set at the Azalea City Classic earlier this season on Sept. 12.
Senior Lauren Scott finished her career with a 22:14.9, while fellow senior Jenna Wesley’s career as a Blazer ended with a personal-best 23:22.40.
Freshman Allison Wortel, competing in the second 6k event of her collegiate career, cut almost 14 seconds off her previous best 6K set at the Azalea City Classic by turning in a 24:17.8. Sophomore Laurie Pray ran a 25:26.4.
UAB’s 500 team points claimed 18th place out of 29 teams. No. 16 Vanderbilt took the team title with 52 points, placing five runners in the top 15. Four-time defending South Regional champion No. 13 Florida State had three runners in the top 10, finishing with 53 points as a team. Alabama rounded out the top three with 135 points.
The Seminoles’ Colleen Quigley took the individual top honor, running a 19:17.0. Chelsea Blaase of Tennessee and Rhianwedd Price of Mississippi State finished second and third, respectively, posting marks of 19:26.2 and 19:37.1. Hannah Maina was the first runner from Conference USA to cross the line, running a 19:58.4 to finish 8th. Crookes was the second highest finisher among C-USA competitors.
