BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB track & field team announced its 2014-15 indoor and outdoor schedule. The Blazers will host three indoor meets at the Birmingham CrossPlex, including the Conference USA Indoor Championships from Feb. 25-26.
“We are excited about our team this year and the schedule we put together,” said head coach Kurt Thomas. “The goal is to challenge our team and to prepare us for our championship season. We've made a few slight changes from past years, and I think this schedule will accomplish what we're trying to do. “
UAB kicks off its season on Dec. 5 at the Birmingham-Southern College Icebreaker at the CrossPlex.
“We will again open up in December at the Birmingham-Southern Icebreaker meet. It's a great way to test our athletes after fall training,” Thomas said.
Following the holiday break, the Blazers return to the track in full swing with the UAB Blazer Invitational from Jan. 9-10 at the CrossPlex.
After a trip to the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville from Jan. 16-17 and the Samford Multi at the CrossPlex, the Blazers host the UAB Vulcan Invite on Jan. 23 and the UAB Green and Gold Invite on Jan. 24. Both events will be held at the CrossPlex.
“With the amazing Birmingham CrossPlex in our backyard, we are spending a good deal of our time there,” Thomas said. “We are very proud to host three indoor meets this year. Our annual Blazer Invite has been one of the largest and most successful indoor meets in the country that weekend every year. We will test ourselves at Vanderbilt the following weekend before coming back home and hosting meets on Jan. 23 and Jan. 24.”
UAB will host the C-USA Indoor Championships for the third-consecutive year at the CrossPlex from Feb. 25-26.
“We are always proud to host the C-USA Indoor Championships and hope our team can be successful there again this year,” said Thomas.
The NCAA Indoor Championships will be hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark., from March 13-14.
“We will open the outdoor season at Samford before going to Alabama Relays as we have done for so many years now,“ Thomas explained.
The Blazers open the outdoor season on March 14 at the Battle of I-65 hosted by Samford in Birmingham, Ala. UAB closes out March at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa from March 20-21 and at the Raleigh Relays hosted by N.C. State from March 27-28.
The team splits on April 3 and 4 as UAB will send participants to the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., and the Auburn Invitational.
“This year we have a young team and we will take them to the Raleigh Relays at N.C. State at the end of March,” said Thomas. “The distance squad will again go to Stanford and Mt. Sac Relays for big tests. The rest of the team will go to Auburn, the Tennessee Relays and Mississippi State.”
The championship season begins at the C-USA Outdoor Championships from May 14-17 in El Paso, Texas, hosted by UTEP. The NCAA East Preliminary is May 28-30 in Jacksonville, Fla., and the NCAA Championships will once again be in Eugene, Ore., at historic Hayward Field from June 10-13.
“Our focus will be on the C-USA Outdoor Championships in May, the NCAA Preliminaries at the University of North Florida and the NCAA Championships in Eugene,” Thomas said.
