BOWLING GREEN, Ky. ---- The UAB women’s soccer team closed its Conference USA weekend road trip on Sunday with a 1-0 loss at WKU.
The Blazers (5-8-2, 2-3-2 C-USA) outshot the Hilltoppers (9-5-0, 4-3-0 C-USA), 14-11, but were only able to put five attempts on frame.
After surrendering the first shot she faced, junior goalkeeper Angelica Jimenez turned aside seven shots, all coming in the second half. Jimenez leads the conference with 95 saves, 13 coming this weekend.
WKU broke the scoreless tie in the 41st minute with a goal from Lauren Moats. Chandler Clark took a free kick for the Hilltoppers in UAB’s midfield that found the head of Moats in the box and beat Jimenez.
Senior midfielder Kelsey Waechter nearly tallied her first points of the season, firing two shots in the 60th minute, one of which found its way off the cross bar.
Sophomore forward Kimberly Fincher had a chance to knot the match in the 86th minute, beating the Hilltoppers’ keeper Allison Leone but bounced the attempt off the post.
The Blazers came out with pressure to start the game, outshooting WKU 6-1 at half and forcing Leone to make three early saves. She finished the game with five stops.
UAB travels to Middle Tennessee next Sunday for a 5 p.m. kickoff at the Dean A. Hayes Track & Soccer Stadium.
