MURFREESBORO, Tenn. ---- The UAB women’s soccer team allowed a goal in the 52nd minute that proved to be the difference, falling on the road to Middle Tennessee, 1-0.
“We created two breakaways, and I told the girls that this is not a team you want to be tied with going into halftime,” said head coach Harold Warren. “When you have two breakaways you need to come away with two goals. We needed to finish those opportunities. Missing opportunities and surrendering second half goals has been the tale of our season. “
Senior midfielder Johanna Liney led the Blazers (5-9-2, 2-4-2 C-USA) with four shots, two finding their way on frame. Junior midfielder Paige Hanks fired off three attempts.
Junior goalkeeper Angelica Jimenez increased her conference-leading save total to 102, turning away seven shots against the Blue Raiders (8-7-2, 5-3-1 C-USA). Jimenez is now fourth in program history for saves in a single season, trailing only Kate Blankenship (2009) and Lisa Nowoslawski (2001) at 103 stops and Katie Forbis at 122 saves (2005).
Middle Tennessee struck with a goal from Angie Lai seven minutes out of halftime. Tori Hawkins chipped a ball into the 18-yard box and found the head of Lai, who played it just over the reach of Jimenez.
The Blue Raiders started the game with a 5-0 shot advantage through the first 15 minutes of play, but UAB turned up its offensive pressure late in the opening half, forcing Kelsey Brouwer to make two saves in the final 10 minutes of the half.
The Blazers finished the match with 10 shots, three making their way to Brouwer. Middle Tennessee finished with a total of 19 shots, eight of which were on goal. The Blue Raiders held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
UAB wraps up the 2014 regular season next week, hosting Rice on Thursday at 7 p.m. and FIU on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at West Campus Field.
