BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Members of the UAB women's soccer team will sit down with UABSports.com throughout the 2014 season to conduct Q&A's. Check back with UABSports.com weekly for different features as the season progresses.
Today's Q&A features sophomore Kasey Johnson, a native of Coppell, Texas. Below Johnson talks about her time in Birmingham and much more.
What has been your favorite moment at UAB?
My favorite moment at UAB was probably getting released to play after my ACL surgery my freshman year. I came in hurt, so I sat out the whole season watching my team play and practice. The moment I was released to finally practice with the team, I was so excited. I finally had a chance to prove myself.
What will you miss most about UAB?
I will miss seeing my teammates everyday. Going through this experience has created many lasting friendships to be thankful for.
If you did not play soccer, what sport would you play?
If I did not play soccer, I would probably play basketball. I enjoy it because it is a lot like the concept of soccer just using your hands.
What are your plans after you finish up at UAB?
My plans are to start working as a nurse and save some money to hopefully travel for a few years and practice nursing in underdeveloped countries.
Who has been the biggest influence on your career?
My parents have definitely been the biggest influence on my career. My dad was my coach starting from day one when I was 3 years old. He taught me all the basics of the game, which were very important to start my career. My mom continues to be my number one fan and is always the one I go to for advice.
If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I would want to go to Iceland. It is a very beautiful place that many people forget about.
What is one thing people do not know about you?
One thing people do not know about me is that I do not burp. It's really weird. I get these throat rolls instead. About once every few months I actually burp and I get so excited and everyone thinks I'm crazy.
What is your favorite thing about living in Birmingham?
My favorite thing about living in Birmingham is getting to experience living in a city. I grew up in a suburb, so it is a different culture. There is always some festival or concert to go see so close to where we live.
The team won 11 games last year and advanced to the C-USA tournament for the first time since 2009, talk about how the success and turnaround from last year helps the team in moving forward this year?
Last year was a great year for us. It proved how successful we could be. Moving forward, we have confidence in knowing how much we are capable of and how we can even further improve from last year.
You play seven games on the road before hosting your first home game on Sept. 19, talk about how much of a grind that's going to be to continuously play on the road and be a little under halfway done with the season before you play at home.
It takes a toll on your body when traveling. We do whatever we can to help our bodies recover for the next game, even if it means ice baths in the hotel shower. Being at home is nice because we have our own fans out there to cheer us on.
