Fairbanks Nabs C-USA Defensive Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior libero Rachel Fairbanks was tabbed the Conference USA Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon. It is the third weekly honor of Fairbanks’ career and the fourth time a UAB volleyball player has been selected this season.
Fairbanks, a 2012 C-USA second-team selection, helped UAB to a 1-1 start in Conference USA play this past weekend. The Blazers defeated Southern Miss 3-2 on Friday, but fell to Tulsa 3-2 on Sunday. In the two matches, Fairbanks scooped up 64 total digs for an average of 6.40 per set
She set a new career-high with 32 digs in the conference opener on Friday and matched the 32-dig performance against three-time defending league champion Tulsa. She tallied the most digs of all players in the two matches. Also contributing offensively for UAB, Fairbanks added five assists, two service aces and a kill on the weekend.
A strong presence on the court all season for UAB, Fairbanks currently ranks 41st nationally with 4.82 digs per set and is fourth in the conference. She has tallied 323 digs so far on the 2013 season, the most of any other player in the league.
Blazer volleyball will continue conference play this weekend when it travels to East Carolina on Friday, Oct. 4 and then Middle Tennessee on Sunday, Oct. 6.
