BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB women's tennis team returns to George Ward Park this weekend to host Southern University at 2 p.m. CT Friday and Brenau University at 11:30 a.m. CT Sunday.
UAB enters play this weekend with an 8-6 overall record and 1-1 mark in Conference USA action. The Blazers face a Southern team that is 5-7 this season and a Brenau squad that is the No. 1 ranked NAIA school in the country.
The Blazers hope to snap a three-match losing skid this week. UAB has faced tough completion as of late with two of the last three matches against teams ranked in the ITA top 50 (#48 Tulane and #19 Notre Dame).
Head coach Lisa Jackson's squad is led by top singles player Isabel Fernandez, who boasts a team-high 10 wins with her 10-4 overall record.
Southern, UAB's opponent on Friday, has lost three-straight contests on the year and most recently dropped a 7-0 match to Virginia Tech on March 13.
Brenau enters Sunday's meeting with the Blazers after defeating Emmanuel College, 9-0. The Golden Tigers moved into the No. 1 spot in the NAIA rankings thanks to an 8-1 win last week against previous No. 1 William Carey.
Following play this weekend, the Blazers stay at home to face Alabama State on April 5 at 1:30 p.m. CT and UTEP on April 7 at 10 a.m. CT.
