BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB women’s tennis team travels a short distance to the Samford Tennis Courts on Wednesday to face the Bulldogs at 1 p.m. CT.
UAB enters the contest with a 5-1 record, while Samford comes into Wednesday’s match at 4-2 overall on the season.
The clash with the Bulldogs is the first of four matches over the span of the next five days. The Blazers face Chattanooga at George Ward Park on Thursday at 1 p.m. CT, before traveling to Auburn on Saturday for a 4 p.m. CT first serve. UAB finishes the coming stretch with the Conference USA opener at home against Southern Miss at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday.
UAB is off to an impressive start under first-year head coach Lisa Jackson. The Blazers are led by strong play at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions, where they have yet to lose a match this season.
Senior Isabel Fernandez and sophomore Rachel Daniell lead UAB with a combined 12-0 record in singles play. Daniell has won in straight-sets in each of her victories, playing mostly at the No. 2 court.
In doubles, Daniell teams with senior Menanteau Moolman for a team-high 4-1 record at the top position, while Fernandez and freshman Elaine Simon are 4-1 at the No. 3 court.
Samford comes into Wednesday’s match following a 5-2 setback to Troy last Saturday. The Bulldogs’ only other loss of the season came at No. 68 Auburn, 4-0, on Feb. 9.
