BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The UAB women's soccer team dropped its first home match of the season, 4-0 to in-state rival Alabama, in front of a crowd of 752 fans that included the entire UAB football team, on Sunday at West Campus Field.
"It was awesome for the football team to come out today, but too bad that we couldn't have given them a better game," said head coach Harold Warren. "It was awesome to see them walk over and be loud and cheer for the girls. The environment was really nice to have."
UAB (0-3) created a number of scoring chances, especially to start off the second half. The opportunities were orchestrated by senior Emma Jane Smith and sophomore Johanna Liney, but both attempts were saved by Alabama (3-0) keeper Shelby Church.
In goal for the Blazers, freshman Courtnie Northern made five saves, and both sides were even in the corner kick battle with six apiece.
"Our issue today was our mentality," Warren said. "We didn't give the effort that we needed to; we didn't do what we were trained to do today. I have to give credit to Alabama, Todd Bramble, their head coach, turned a program that was struggling into an NCAA team, but we should have been able to do a lot better than we did today."
Up next, UAB returns to West Campus Field to host Oklahoma State on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. CT.
