BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Fresh off her first collegiate tournament title at the Belmont Invitational, UAB sophomore Caitlin Watts was selected Wednesday as the Conference USA Women's Golfer of the Week.
Watts fired rounds of 74 and 75 to finish with a 36-hole total of five-over 149 at the par-72 Old Hickory Country Club outside Nashville. She came from three strokes down entering Tuesday's final round to win by one shot as she helped UAB to a third-place finish as a team.
The LaGrange, Ga., product, whose score of 149 marked the second-lowest 36-hole total of her career, became the first Blazer to win a tournament since teammate Jaime Ritter in the first event of the 2010-11 season.
Watts, who was also named to the all-tournament team this week, now has three top-3 finishes this year -- all in the past five tournaments. She placed third at UAB's Fall Beach Blast back in November and second at the South Alabama Women's Invitational in February.
For the season, Watts leads UAB with a 76.56 scoring average. The player-of-the-week award is the first of her career. The last UAB women's golfer to earn the honor was Ritter following her win in the 2010-11 campaign.
UAB returns to action next Monday and Tuesday, April 9-10, with the Samford Invitational at Limestone Springs Golf Club in Oneonta, Ala. It is the Blazers' final event before the Conference USA Championships later this month in Gulf Shores, Ala.
