UAB Treks To UTEP For Three-Game Set

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –With only three Conference USA series left, the UAB softball team will trek to El Paso, Texas to take on UTEP in a three-game set. The series will kick off Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. MT, followed by a single game on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. MT.

UAB At A Glance
The Blazers (28-16, 11-4 C-USA) sit in second place in Conference USA standings and are receiving one vote in the most recent ESPN.com/USA Softball poll. In addition, the Blazers have the highest RPI ranking among C-USA schools, rated No. 33.
The Green and Gold recently split a doubleheader at Chattanooga, falling in game one, 9-8, and winnings game two, 6-3. UAB hit six home runs on the day to bump the team’s season total to 43, surpassing the 2009 squad (40) for the most round trippers the team has hit in a single season.
Five Blazers are hitting over .300 led by Mandy Lowman (.373) with Kayla Orr running her a close second (.372). Kristen McGrath leads the squad with 12 homers and 32 RBI on 39 hits.
Pitcher Lannah Campbell (11-6) has seen the most time in the circle. The sophomore has pitched 103.1 innings with 111 strikeouts, 16 walks and just 26 earned runs.
Scouting UTEP
The Miners (13-31, 2-16) head into the three-game series after being swept by Memphis last weekend.
Camilla Carrera leads the nation in home runs with 27, while teammate Chelsea Troupe is No. 8 nationally with 15 long balls. Carrera is batting .458 with 50 runs and 59 RBI on 55 hits.
Collen Hohman (5-15) and Cynthia Villastrigo (5-12) share the majority of the pitching responsibilities. Hohman has a team-best 5.61 ERA with 89 strikeouts, 100 earned runs and 106 walks in 124.2 innings of work.
Series History
The Blazers lead the all-time series, 10-8. In the team’s last meeting, UAB swept UTEP in Birmingham on April 2-3. When playing UTEP in El Paso, Texas, the Blazers are 3-6.
