UAB Splits Doubleheader At Chattanooga Wednesday

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. –The UAB softball team split a doubleheader against Chattanooga on Wednesday at Jim Frost Stadium. The Blazers fell in game one, 9-8, before winning the nightcap, 6-2, which snapped a 15 home game win streak for the Mocs.
On the day, the Blazers hit six home runs to bump the team’s season total to 43 , surpassing the 2009 squad (40) for the most long balls the team has hit in a single season.
Senior Kayla Orr led UAB’s offensive output going 2-for-6 with two runs, six RBI and two home runs. Catherine Crawford went 4-for-6 with three runs, one home run and two RBI.
Game 1: Chattanooga 9, UAB 8
UAB was fast out of the gate as the Blazers strung together three hits for three runs in the top of the first frame. Leadoff batter Whitney Fletcher reached on a bunt and moved to second on a single to left by Crawford. K. Orr stepped to the dish and blasted her fifth home run of the season to put the Blazers up, 3-0.
Chattanooga retaliated in the bottom of the inning, scoring six runs on five hits. The Mocs batted through the order and with the score tied 3-3, loaded the bases. UAB starter Leigh Streetman walked in the next two runs and Layne Rainey’s infield single gave Chattanooga a 6-3 lead.
Two home runs to left field from Jessica Traxler and Sarah Beth Roberts in the third inning gave Chattanooga an 8-3 advantage.
In the top of the fifth, the Blazers cut the Mocs lead down to 8-7. Heather Pearson singled through the left side and moved to second on a single off the bat of Crawford.
In the next at bat, K. Orr rocked her second three-run homer of the game over the center field wall, followed by a solo-shot from K. McGrath over the left field wall.
Trailing 8-7 in the top of the seventh inning, Fletcher drew a walk and scored on an RBI double smoked to left center by Mandy Lowman.
But with two outs in the bottom of the same frame, Ninjja Suetsugu hit an RBI single to center field to score the go ahead run.
Reliever Lannah Campbell (11-6) suffered the loss, allowing one earned run in 3.2 innings pitched with four strikeouts.
Michelle Fuzzard (12-6) earned the win. She sacrificed one earned run on one hit and two strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.
Game 2: UAB 6, Chattanooga 3
Pearson’s first collegiate home run – a three-run shot over the left field wall – in the second inning gave UAB an early 3-0 lead. Pearson scored Armstrong, who reached on a fielder’s choice and Sisson, who singled to center.
In the same inning with Fletcher on first, Crawford hit her fourth bomb of the season to give UAB a 5-0 lead.
The Mocs got on the board in the fourth inning thanks to a leadoff bomb over the center field wall by Vivian Morimoto. Chattanooga added one additional run in the fifth frame when Willis singled, moved to second on a walk drawn by Stephanie Rieck and scored on a fielding error by K. Orr.
Fletcher ripped her seventh round tripper of the season in a leadoff at bat in the sixth inning to give UAB a 6-2 advantage.
The Mocs loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but were only able to score one run on a sacrifice fly by Willis.
Amber Torres (7-3) was credited with the win. She tossed her fourth complete game with seven strikeouts and one walk.
Fuzzard (12-7) got the start for Chattanooga and was tagged with the loss. She pitched 1.2 innings, allowing five earned runs on five hits.
