Blazers Wrap Up Mississippi State Invite

STARKVILLE, Miss. –The UAB track and field team wrapped up a successful final day at the Mississippi State Invite on Saturday highlighted by three first-place finishes.
Sophomore Alexis Bates recorded a first-place finish in the 100 meters with a personal-best time of 11.54. Sophomore Angel Watson finished fourth in the same event with a personal-record time of 11.69.
Watson also took second place in the 200 meters and first among collegiate competitors with a personal-best time of 24.13.
Mid-distance runners Lucy Taylor and Lauren Fayen claimed first place finishes in their events. Taylor was tops in the 800 meters with a time of 2:11.62 (a personal record) and Fayen placed first in the 1,500 meters, logging a time of 4:40.08.
Junior Thelyssa Katchen placed fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 56.69, while Kyana White took sixth with a time of 57.55 in the same race.
Freshman Jessica Shelley recorded a season-best 14.57 and a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles.
The foursome of Rachel Harley, Lytrice Thomas, White and Katchen timed a 3:49.05 in the 4x400-meter relay for second place.
Freshman Shelby Barker high jumped a season-best 1.65m for third place and leaped 11.56m for second place in the triple jump. Fellow freshman Kendra Gipson triple jumped to third place (11.41m).
Sophomore Kelli Smith long jumped 5.63m for a fourth-place finish.
The Blazers are back in action next Friday and Saturday, April 20-21 at the Auburn Invitational and the Mt. SAC Relays.
