BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –The UAB track and field is set to compete at the Mississippi State Invitational at the Spencer Stadium/Maddox Track in Starkville, Miss.
The two-day meet will kick off Friday at 2 p.m. CT with the women’s hammer and pole vault, and conclude Saturday with the men’s 4x400-meter relay at 5:30 p.m. CT.
“The meet at Mississippi State comes at a good time for us in the season,” head coach Kurt Thomas said. “Our girls have been training hard, and are coming off of big meets, and important performances. We are just a few weeks away from the C-USA Championships, and are looking at the Mississippi State meet to work on a lot of things in each event area.”
Three Blazers will compete Friday with Toni Hawkins in the pole vault and Sarah Hudak and Kristina Vaughn running the 5,000 meters.
UAB will compete in the high, triple and long jumps Saturday afternoon, along with the 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, 1,500 meters, 4x400-meter relay and the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles.
“For some of the sprinters and jumpers, it gives us a good opportunity to compete in our primary event,” Thomas said. “At previous relay meets, we ran in 2, 3 or 4 events in just a few days. Saturday we can really focus on one race and be at our best.
“The distance athletes are in some off events, moving up to a longer race, and/or down to a shorter one. It’s good training, especially with just a few weeks left until conference. Most of these girls have competed here before. Mississippi State’s facility is less than a year old and is really nice, so it’ll be a good environment to compete.”
