UAB Sweeps Doubleheader against Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team swept a doubleheader against Samford with a pair of run-rule victories on Tuesday night at the UAB Softball Field. The Blazers downed the Bulldogs, 12-4 in five innings and 8-0 in six innings.
UAB improves to 25-14 overall, while Samford falls to 9-29.
On the day, the Blazers scored 20 runs on 23 hits. Senior Kayla Orr went 4-for-8 (.500) with one double, one homerun, two runs and six RBI. Junior Whitney Fletcher batted .429 (3-for-7) with three runs, one triple, one homerun and five RBI.
The Blazers return to action this weekend when they welcome UCF for a three game series. UAB and UCF will meet in a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m., before playing a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Game 1: UAB 12, Samford 4
The game was scoreless until Samford put two runs on the scoreboard in the third inning. With one out, Misha Aldridge hit a two-run double.
UAB evened the score in the bottom of the same frame on an RBI double from Erica Sisson and a single up the middle off the bat of Heather Pearson.
The Blazers broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring eight runs on seven hits. UAB batted through the order and the cycle tallying two doubles, one triple and a K. Orr homerun in the inning.
Samford recorded two more runs in the fifth inning thanks to a two-run blast by Shelby Scott.
The Blazers closed the door in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double by K. Orr.
Leigh Streetman (7-5) earned the win for the Blazers, allowing four earned runs and striking out six batters in 5.0 innings pitched.
Misha Aldridge (5-14) suffered the loss, pitching 3.1 innings before Scott relieved her and tossed the remaining frame.
Game 2: UAB 8, Samford 0
UAB scored four runs in the third and sixth innings to shut the Bulldogs out 8-0 in game two.
A pair of two-run homers from Fletcher and Kristen McGrath scored Pearson and pinch runner Tiffany Smith to give UAB a 4-0 lead in the third inning.
In the sixth inning, Hayley Davis reached first on a Samford miscue. Megan McGrath and Pearson laced back-to-back singles to load the bases with no outs. Fletcher reached first safely, scoring Davis, and K. Orr hit a single that scored M. McGrath and Fletcher. With two outs and the winning run on third base, Amy Dennis singled to left field to drive in K. Orr and give UAB the final 8-0 lead.
Amber Torres (6-3) pitched her third complete game and shutout of the season. She scattered three hits, walked one and struck out five batters in 6.0 innings pitched.
Nicole Bobrowski (0-4) was tagged with the loss, allowing eight runs, just one earned, and 12 hits.
