UAB Posts Pair Of 2-0 Wins Against UCF

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –The UAB softball team posted a pair of 2-0 victories against Conference USA opponent UCF on Saturday at the UAB Softball Field.
The Blazers (27-14, 11-3 C-USA) and the Knights (30-12, 9-5) were in a three-way tie with Houston for second place in the C-USA standings heading into today’s doubleheader.
The teams will take the field again on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the series finale. GameTracker and a live in-game chat will be available for the game by logging on to www.UABsports.com.
Game 1: UAB 2, UCF 0
Sophomore Kristen McGrath played a part in both of UAB’s runs in the first game. The Tampa, Fla. native smacked a solo-shot over the left field fence in the second inning to put UAB on top, 1-0.
In the sixth inning, K. McGrath drew a walk with one out. Tiffany Smith entered the game to pinch run and advanced to second on a base hit from Lauren Webster. Pinch hitter and K. McGrath’s twin sister Megan scored Smith on a single to left field, giving UAB the final 2-0 advantage.
K. McGrath now has 11 long balls on the season. She needs just three more home runs to surpass the UAB single-season record of 13 set by Andrea Rodgers in 2007.
UAB pitcher Lannah Campbell (11-5) tossed her seventh complete game and fifth shutout of the season, allowing just two hits, walking one and striking out seven.
UCF’s Ali Schmidt (9-3) suffered the loss allowing seven hits, two runs and striking out three in 5.1 innings pitched.
Game 2: UAB 2, UCF 0
The Blazers wasted little time in the second game, scoring in the first and third innings.
Senior Catherine Crawford out ran her bunt up the third base line in the bottom of the first inning and stole second to put herself in scoring position for Kayla Orr.
Two wild pitches from UCF hurler Mackenzie Audas sent Crawford to third and across home plate.
In the third inning, Kayla Orr cranked a leadoff home run – her fourth homer of the season – to left field to put UAB ahead, 2-0.
Leigh Streetman (8-5) earned the win, pitching her fifth complete game and second shutout of the season. Streetman scattered three hits, walked one and struck out six.
Audas (16-6) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs on four hits. She walked two and struck out 11 Blazer batters.
