STATESBORO, Ga. - The 29th-ranked UAB men's golf team closed play at the 33rd Annual Schenkel Invitational in fifth overall with a nine-under par 855 (286-279-290).
The 54-hole mark by the Blazers was the second-lowest tournament score this year. UAB carded a tournament-winning score of 835 at the Sam Hall Invitational last September.
"We didn't play particularly well over our last nine holes," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "We left some strokes on the course and that prevented us from having a top three finish. Otherwise, I am pleased with the way we played and we are looking forward to playing in the Bancorp South Intercollegiate (April 2-3 in Jackson, Miss.)."
The Blazers were led once again by the tandem of sophomore Sam Love and freshman Paul Dunne, who matched eachother round-for-round and tied for 16th overall. The duo each recorded rounds of 70-69-74 to finish at three-under par 213. It marked a career-best 54-hole for Dunne, shattering his previous best of 218, set at the 2011 St. Mary's Intercollegiate.
Sophomore Wilson McDonald also set a career-low tournament score with his one-under par 215 (72-71-72) on the par 72, 6,962-yard Forest Country Club course. McDonald closed play tied for 21st overall.
Sophomore Thomas Sutton tied for 31st with a one-over 217 (76-70-71), while junior Hunter Hawkins rounded out the Blazers in 41st with a 220 (74-73-73)
Seventh-ranked Alabama (817) ran away with the team title, finishing 22 strokes ahead of second place No. 26 Virginia (839). Auburn, ranked No. 2, and No. 24 Florida tied for third, eight strokes ahead of the Blazers with an 847. UAB finished two spots ahead of No. 15 North Florida (862).
The 14-team field featured six squads ranked among the top 30 in the country.
