Blazers Tame Wildcats, 6-5, in 10 Innings

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The UAB softball team battled back from a 5-0 deficit to defeat Kentucky, 6-5, in 10 innings in its second game of the University of Kentucky tournament on Friday.
The Blazers improve to 13-10 overall, and the Wildcats fall to 10-14. UAB outhit Kentucky, 13-9. The Blazers line up saw 18 different athletes enter the game.
The Wildcats jumped on the board first, scoring five runs in the first two innings. UAB slowly chipped away at Kentucky's lead, as the Blazers scored a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings, and the tying run in the top of the seventh.
Senior Kayla Orr put the Blazers ahead, 6-5, in the top of the 10th inning. As the leadoff batter, she rocked the first pitch over the center field wall for her second homer of the season. K. Orr went 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.
Senior Tiffany Smith went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. It was senior Catherine Crawford's RBI single in the top of the seventh that pushed Smith across the plate and forced extra frames.
Smith reached first on a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Maegan Hornsby. Smith stole third and with two outs scored on Crawford's single through the left side.
Hornsby and Hailey Glynn, pinch running for Mandy Lowman, each scored a run.
The Blazers used a trio of pitchers in the win. Lannah Campbell got the start and pitched 1.2 innings, allowing five runs and striking out three. Amber Torres relieved Campbell and pitched 5.1 innings. She struck out four batters and allowed just three hits. Leigh Streetman (5-3) came into the game and pitched the remaining 3.0 innings to earn the win.
Rachel Riley (2-4) suffered the loss for Kentucky. She pitched 9.1 innings, striking out eight batters and allowing six runs (four earned).
The Blazers continue action in the UK tournament tomorrow with a matchup against NC State. NC State and UAB are both undefeated in tourney play and will compete for the top seed tomorrow at 11 a.m. ET.
