BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After four scoreless innings, the South Alabama Jaguars scored one unearned run in the fifth inning to defeat the UAB softball team, 1-0, on Wednesday at the UAB Softball Field.
The Blazers fall to 11-10 overall, while the Jaguars improve to 15-6.
Sophomore pitcher Lannah Campbell was tagged with the loss for UAB. She struck out eight batters and allowed just one run on two hits in a complete-game effort.
Her twin sister Hannah Campbell earned the win for the Jaguars. She tossed all seven innings, striking out five batters and scattering five hits.
UAB outhit South Alabama, 5-2, but it was two fielding errors in the fifth inning that let the winning run score.
“When you have pitchers like those two, it’s a matter of defense. We have to take away the errors in the infield,” head coach Marla Townsend said. “I thought we had some amazing defensive plays, but we can’t let up. They took advantage of the defensive errors that we made.”
UAB had opportunities to score runs, but left six runners on base.
“We have to perform at the plate and that one run doesn’t hurt us,” Townsend said. “There are a couple of things we have to work on. When we have the lead off hitters on base, we need to execute the sacrifice bunt and we didn’t do that.”
Christin Crocker scored the deciding run. She reached first on a fielding error by Kate Armstrong, stole second and scored from second on a throwing error by Catherine Crawford.
In the bottom of the seventh, UAB had the tying run on second in Tiffany Smith. Smith entered the game to run for Megan McGrath who singled. Smith moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Armstrong, but the next two batters were out to end the game.
The Blazers return to action Thursday with a doubleheader at Lipscomb in Nashville, Tenn. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. CT.
