BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB softball team blanked Memphis, 2-0, on Sunday at the UAB Softball Field to complete the series sweep.
The Blazers improved to 11-9 overall and 3-0 in Conference USA, while Memphis fell to 5-19 and 0-3 in league play.
"Memphis is a good team. They made some great plays," head coach Marla Townsend said. "I'm proud of the way we came out. I felt like we got better every game. I'm happy to get the win and it's nice to get the series as well."
The Blazers struck first in the bottom of the first frame. Catherine Crawford walked to first and moved to third on a Mandy Lowman single to left field. Kristen McGrath stepped to the plate with two outs and singled through the right side to score Crawford.
The game remained 1-0 through five innings of play. UAB starter Lannah Campbell (4-3) gave up just one hit and struck out seven batters in a complete game effort.
The Blazer pitching staff did not allow a walk in the three-game series.
UAB added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to Crawford's fourth triple of the season. With two outs, Kayla Orr's grounder to shortstop was mishandled and she reached first safely, allowing Crawford to score from third.
Crawford led UAB offensively, going 2-for-2 on the day and scoring both of runs. Lowman also collected a pair of hits.
Ellen Roberts (3-8) suffered the loss for Memphis. She sacrificed six hits, walked two batters and struck out three.
The Blazers return to action Wednesday when they play host to South Alabama at the UAB Softball Field. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT.
