BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB track and field team will hit the road for the first time this season as it competes at the Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. The 25th annual invitational will be held in the Notre Dame Loftus Sports Center.
The meet will feature elite talent including four top-25 teams in No. 3 Arkansas, No. 13 Southern Miss, No. 15 Ohio State and No. 23 Michigan. In addition to Southern Miss, two additional C-USA schools will compete in Tulsa and Rice.
“The Meyo meet will be a great test for our athletes. It’s by far the biggest, most competitive meet thus far during our indoor season,” head coach Kurt Thomas said. “The athletes we are taking have several races and training sessions under their belt since getting back to campus a month ago, and this is the time to prove themselves. A meet of this caliber will test them to see where they are against some of the best teams in the country.”
The two-day meet will begin Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. with the women’s long jump. Competition resumes Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with the 3,000m and concludes at 5 p.m. with the men’s invitational 4x400-meter relay.
Several Blazers will compete on Friday in the long jump, 5,000 meters, 500 meters and the 60 meters and 60-meter hurdles preliminary rounds. UAB will run in the 3,000 meters, 400 meters, 200 meters, 800 meters and 4x400-meter relay on Saturday. A pair of Blazers will compete in field events on Saturday in the triple jump and pole vault.
UAB wrapped up a successful Birmingham Invitational last week where six Blazers set personal-best indoor times. Seniors Kristina Vaughn, Lucy Taylor and Clara Cid all set PRs in the mile run, while junior Sarah Hudak did the same in the 3,000 meters.
Sophomores Angel Watson and Alexis Bates set new personal-record times in the 200-meters.
