SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Senior Clara Cid raced to a personal-record in the 5,000-meter run as the UAB track and field team completed a successful day of competition at the 25th annual Meyo Invitational.
Cid, a native of Zaragoza, Spain, clocked a personal-best time of 17.02.98. The distance runner placed 15th out of 41 participants. Teammate Sarah Hudak took fourth in the event with a time of 16:41.81 – the fourth fastest indoor 5,000-meter time in UAB history.
"We had some very nice performances here tonight. It's good to see the girls step up in a highly competitive situation like this and come through with season bests and personal bests,” head coach Kurt Thomas said. “The highlight of the night was the 5K. Sarah had a great run and ran a very good time. That puts her up there on our all-time list and really improves her standings in the conference. Clara had a great run as well.”
Earlier in the day, sophomore Kelli Smith long jumped a season-best 5.71m (18-8.75), placed 15th out of a total 42 jumpers.
Sophomores Alexis Bates and Angel Watson both tied their personal-records in the preliminary 60-meter round, advancing to the finals on Saturday. Bates finished the race fifth (7.61), while Watson just made the cut in 12th place (7.72).
Junior Akira McSwain qualified for the 60-meter hurdles final after completing the preliminary round in 8.90.
“Akira, Angel and Alexis ran well in the short sprints and hurdles and have a chance to go faster in the finals tomorrow,” Thomas said. “We have several more opportunities tomorrow to step up and perform again and I feel like they're ready for the challenge."
Juniors Rachel Harley and Lytrice Thomas rounded out UAB’s competition for the day, competing in the 500 meters. Harley logged a new personal-record time of 1:17.38, while Thomas crossed the finish line right behind Harley in 1:17.44.
Action at the Notre Dame Loftus Sports Center continues Saturday morning at 10 a.m. UAB will run in the 3,000 meters, 400 meters, 200 meters, 800 meters and 4x400-meter relay. A pair of Blazers will compete in field events -- triple jump and pole vault.
