BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team will take the court for the first time in 10 days Wednesday when it makes the short trip to Samford for a 1 p.m. matchup with the crosstown rival Bulldogs.
The Blazers (1-3) were scheduled to play Sunday against Rice, but the match was called off because of rain and wet court conditions. The team's most recent live match action came on Feb. 12 when the Blazers suffered a 5-2 loss to South Alabama.
Isabel Fernandez at No. 2 singles and Rachel Daniell at the No. 3 position accounted for UAB's two points against the Jaguars. Fernandez and Daniell own identical 3-1 records in singles action this spring to lead the Blazers.
Samford (6-0) remained unblemished over the weekend with a 7-0 sweep of Southern Miss at the Samford Tennis Complex. The Bulldogs have won their six matches -- all at home -- by a combined score of 34-5.
Kristin Lewis, Samford's top player, owns a 5-1 singles record in dual matches, while No. 2 player Madelie Janse Van Rensburg carries a perfect 6-0 mark.
UAB and Samford met last season with the Bulldogs earning a 7-0 win. Eight sets in singles play were decided by scores of 6-4 or closer, but Samford won seven of them on its way to the victory.
Wednesday's match will be the first of three contests in Birmingham this week for UAB, which hosts North Alabama on campus Saturday and plays UTSA at Samford on Sunday.
