WAYNESVILLE, N.C. --- Sophomore Caitlin Watts matched her 2-over par 74 first-round performance on Tuesday to close as the top finisher for the UAB women's golf team at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate at the Waynesville Inn Golf Resort.
Despite early morning showers and the dampness of the course, UAB secured the 12th position in the 23-team tournament with a team score of 602 after 36 holes.
A late surge by Eastern Kentucky on day two helped the Colonels win the tournament with a team score of 576. Tournament host Western Carolina and UNC Greensboro rounded out the top-3 with team scores of 580 and 583, respectively.
Western Carolina freshman Sofie Kvarnstrom shot a 66 in round two and a 135 overall to win the tournament.
Watts finished the tournament tied for 21st with a 148 stroke count after 36 holes, while defending medalist Jaime Ritter closed at 150 to tie for 42nd. Freshman Holly Robinson shot the best round of the day for UAB with an even-par 72 and finished with a two-day total of 151. Junior Ana Martin's 153 and redshirt freshman Amanda Richey's 160 rounded out the Blazer lineup.
UAB head coach Kim Wilcox was pleased with her team's performance.
"Our girls did well," Wilcox said. "This was a good event for the fall season. We are looking forward to Charleston next month, and we will take advantage of three more weeks of practice. Holly (Robinson) and Caitlin (Watts) both had great starts."
The women's golf team's next event will be on Oct. 17-18 when they compete in the Charleston Southern Tournament in Charleston, S.C.
