NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Senior forward Tiffini Turpin scored the golden goal in the 99th minute, lifting UAB to a 3-2 win in overtime against Belmont at E.S. Rose Park on Friday night.
The Blazers owned a 23-12 shot advantage and out cornered the Bruins 8-3. The win improved UAB’s record to 2-2 on the season.
“Belmont is a strong, high-pressuring team that made it difficult for us to maintain a rhythym in the first half," head coach Harold Warren said. "We found our rhythym in the second half, creating several scoring opportunities; we were in control."
Belmont (2-2) notched the first goal in the 18th minute when freshman Taylor Smith picked up the rebound from Gretchen Sutch to find the back of the net. Two minutes later, senior Jamie Loftis redirected a corner kick by Lauren Paynter to put the Bruins up, 2-0.
Freshman Mary Catherine Combs capped off the scoring in the first half when she drilled the ball into the back of the net off a rebound inside the box in the 38th minute for her first career goal, cutting the Bruins lead to one.
UAB took control of the game in the second half. Senior midfielder Carolyn Polcari scored the equalizer in the 60th minute after she rocketed a corner kick through the Bruin defenders and across the goal line.
With the score tied 2-2, UAB played fierce in the overtime period. The Blazers wasted little time attacking the Bruins defense, tallying five shots in the first five minutes. Their hard work paid off when freshman Johanna Liney served Turpin who fired the ball past the Bruins keeper.
The Blazers return to action on Sunday when they host No. 7 Florida State. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. CT.
