BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Senior Heather Thomas of the volleyball team was recently named UAB Student-Athlete of the Week. It is the first time in the libero's career she has earned the weekly award that acknowledges those who succeed both in the classroom and in athletic competition for the Blazers.
The Madison, Ala. native reset the UAB record books by breaking a 20-year mark for career digs against Eastern Kentucky in the Owls Classic in Kennesaw, Ga. last weekend. In the Blazers' match against the Colonels, Thomas recorded her 1,652th dig to take the top spot in school history. She now has 1,672 digs for her career, which ranks 11th all-time in Conference USA.
Thomas helped guide a defense that went a perfect 3-0 at the Owls Classic, en route to being named to the all-tournament team. She averaged 4.44 digs and 0.67 aces per set over the three-match stretch to help improve UAB's record to 7-2 on the season.
The senior has also been extremely durable and dependable seeing game action in every possible set since donning the Green and Gold as a freshman in 2008.
Thomas is a civil engineering major, with a minor in business administration and has maintained a 3.12 grade point average.
