BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The 2011 football season has officially arrived for the UAB Blazers.
The Blazers reported for fall camp on Sunday with the first practice scheduled for Monday.
UAB head coach Neil Callaway welcomed his full squad as he kicks off his fifth season at the helm of the Blazers' program.
"It's an exciting day to get all these guys back together," Callaway said. "We can't have a lot of involvement with them during the summer, so it's just kind of getting started for us. We had some preliminary academic meetings. We'll be on the field tomorrow for the first time. I know the players are excited, and we're excited to get going."
The players reported Sunday afternoon, many of them checking into Rast Hall on campus. Later, they attended a team meeting with various campus and athletic department officials before settling in for a team dinner in the Green and Gold Room in Bartow Arena.
The Blazers return 16 starters from last year's team, including a pair of preseason first-team All-Conference USA selections in offensive tackle Matt McCants and defensive tackle Elliott Henigan.
UAB opens its 2011 season on Saturday, Sept. 10 when the Blazers travel to Gainesville, Fla., to take on the Florida Gators (7:00 p.m. ET/Fox Sports Net).
