BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB women's tennis coach Krissy Hall has announced the addition of three players to the Blazers' roster for the 2011-12 year.
Maci Goggans from Gulf Shores High School in Orange Beach, Ala., has signed a National Letter of Intent with UAB, while Isabel Fernandez (VCU) and Sarah Witkowski (Memphis) will join the program as transfers. All three are eligible to compete for the Blazers this fall.
"I am thrilled with this group of incoming young ladies," Hall said. "All of them are going to make an immediate impact on the lineup and on UAB as a whole. They are players of great character and will represent our team in a first-class manner both on and off the court. I am so excited to see what they are going to accomplish over the next few years."
Goggans played both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles at Gulf Shores High School, where she was a two-time Class 5A state singles finalist and a state singles champion as a junior. Following that state title run, she was selected by the Mobile Press-Register as its 2010 Region Player of the Year.
In 2011, Goggans was named the USTA Alabama Junior Female Player of the Year. Originally from Birmingham, she has been ranked No. 1 in the state at some point in every age division of her junior career. She also represented Alabama in the Bullfrog Southern Junior Cup. Just as strong academically, Goggans graduated at the top of her high school class.
Fernandez, a product of Gijon, Spain, just wrapped up her first collegiate season after joining the VCU program in January. She was part of a Rams team that spent much of the year in the top 25 of the ITA rankings and earned an at-large berth into the NCAA tournament. Fernandez went 1-1 during the dual-match season in limited action as a newcomer. As a junior player, she was ranked among the top 10 in her age group in Spain.
Witkowski just completed her first season at Memphis. A product of Peachtree City, Ga., she went 2-2 in singles and 2-1 in doubles during an injury-shortened fall season. She also missed the spring campaign due to injury.
Home-schooled as a high schooler, Witkowski won the Georgia Independent School Association Class AA girls' state singles championship as a freshman in 2007 while competing for The Heritage School. She also helped the Hawks to a team state title that year. As a junior player, Witkowski was consistently ranked among the top 30 in the Southern region and the top 125 nationally.
Goggans, Fernandez and Witkowski will join Douglasville, Ga., product Rachel Daniell, who signed with the Blazers in November, as newcomers for the UAB women's tennis program in 2011-12.
