BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Former UAB softball player Natalie Mitchell has been awarded the Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship, Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced Monday.
Mitchell is one of the 12 recipients selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors for the $4,000 scholarship.
This is the third year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November 2008.
A 4.0 student at UAB, Mitchell in May received her bachelor of science degree in molecular biology with a minor in chemistry. The Kingston, Pa. native was a four-year infielder for the Blazers who have earned back-to-back trips to the NCAA Championship.
Mitchell is a four-time winner of the C-USA Academic Medal and has been on the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll four times as well. Earlier this year, Mitchell was named a co-recipient of UAB's Female Academic Award that goes to the Blazer student-athlete with the highest grade point average. Mitchell shared the honor with Jenny Cape of the women's tennis team.
She was a member of the UAB Science and Technology Honors Program throughout her collegiate career and was accepted to the Fifth Year Master's Program in the UAB Department of Biology. She has simultaneously been working on her thesis project to earn her master's this December before she enrolls in medical school.
