BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB freshman pitcher Leigh Streetman tossed a one-hit shutout against the Chattanooga Lady Mocs to lead the Blazer softball team to a 1-0 victory in game two of Thursday night's doubleheader at UAB Softball Field. The Blazers (28-10) dropped the first game, 11-3, in six innings.
"The way we bounced back in game two shows the determination in this team," UAB head coach Marla Townsend said. "They put the first game behind them, played solid defense and Leigh was in a groove."
Game One: Chattanooga 11, UAB 3
The Lady Mocs (26-9) put up a four-spot in the top of the second and never looked back. A two-out single scored a pair of runs for Chattanooga, then the Lady Mocs added two more on centerfielder Lyndsey Stiles' double. Third baseman Tiffany Baker extended Chattanooga's lead with a two-run homer in the third to make it 6-0.
UAB inched back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring a pair of runs to cut the deficit to four. Leftfielder Hailey Glynn led off with a single and worked her way to third after centerfielder Caley Walden smacked a single. Shortstop Catherine Douglass drove in both runs with base-knock to make it 6-2.
Chattanooga tacked on three more runs in the fourth, collecting five hits in the inning to drive in the trio of runs. UAB would add one more run in the bottom of the inning, as Douglass collected her third RBI of the game, but Chattanooga first baseman Kasey Tydingco slugged a two-run home run in the sixth to seal the 11-3 win.
Michelle Fuzzard (12-5) picked up the win after tossing five innings and giving up three earned runs on nine hits. Alisha Smith (7-2) suffered the loss, pitching two innings and allowing six earned runs on six hits while fanning three.
Game Two: UAB 1, Chattanooga 0
Walden led off the game with a grounder to second, but beat the throw for a hit and made her way to third after back-to-back groundouts. A wild pitch plated Walden for the 1-0 lead.
That was all the run-support UAB starter Leigh Streetman (8-4) would need. Streetman made quick work of the Lady Mocs, going the distance and striking out seven while allowing just one hit. She retired the final 11 batters in a row to pick up the win. Chattanooga starter Nikki Waters (6-2) took the loss, tossing 3.2 innings and giving up the game's only run on five hits.
The Blazers begin a three-game stint on the road next Tuesday with a doubleheader at Kennesaw State. The first game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT.
