KENNESAW, Ga. -- UAB freshman pitcher Leigh Streetman earned her second straight shutout as she led UAB to a 2-0 win over the Kennesaw State Owls in the opener of a doubleheader on Tuesday evening at Bailey Park. Streetman allowed just two hits as she went the distance and fanned 10. The Blazers (29-11) dropped the second contest, 6-0.
"I thought we played an all-around solid game in the first game," UAB head coach Marla Townsend said. "We didn't have a lot of hits, but we did what we needed to do to get the win and Leigh was outstanding. But the wheels fell off for us in the second game."
Game One: UAB 2, Kennesaw State 0
UAB catcher Mandy Lowman belted her fourth home run of the season in the second inning to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead. Lowman took a 1-1 pitch just over the rightfield wall.
The Blazers tacked on an insurance run in the top of the sixth to make it 2-0. Centerfielder Caley Walden singled to lead off the inning then reached second on an error by the shortstop. Walden made her way to third on shortstop Kayla Orr's sacrifice bunt. Lowman followed with a grounder to short for the third out, but the shortstop bobbled the ball allowing Walden to score before the final out of the inning.
Streetman's (9-4) 10 strikeouts marked a career-high for the righty and a season-high for any Blazer pitcher. Streetman didn't allow a hit after the third inning and retired the final seven batters in a row.
Game Two: Kennesaw State 6, UAB 0
The two teams battled through four scoreless innings before the Owls put up a three-spot in the bottom of the fifth. Centerfielder Sara Sikes ripped a double then scored on third baseman Ashlee Burkett's triple to right-center. Two batters later, designated player Jessica Cross hit a two-run homer to give Kennesaw State a 3-0 lead.
The Blazers had opportunities to put a run across in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, UAB had runners at the corners with one out, but a strikeout and fly to left ended the threat. The Blazers loaded the bases in the top of the fifth with two outs, but a grounder allowed the Owls to get out of the jam. UAB stranded a total of 11 runners throughout the game.
The Owls added three more runs in the sixth to make it 6-0. Sikes' triple drove in a pair of runs in the inning and leftfielder Sharon Swanson added the third with an RBI-single.
Starter Alisha Smith (7-3) suffered the loss, giving up one earned run on six hits through four innings. UAB used four pitchers in the contest, combining to allow six runs on 13 hits. Owls' Abbey Meixel (6-4) picked up the win after tossing three innings of three-hit ball. Meixel combined with starter Amanda Henderson for the five-hit shutout.
UAB wraps up its three-game road swing with a contest at Jacksonville State Thursday. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. CT.
