EL PASO, Texas -- The UAB women's tennis team dropped a tight, 4-3 decision to Idaho on Sunday in its second of three matches in El Paso, Texas.
The Blazers fell to 4-6 with the loss, while Idaho improved to 7-3. UAB will close out its trip Monday with a 10 a.m. MT (11 a.m. CT) contest against UTEP.
Saturday's loss featured close matches across the board, but Idaho was able to pull out two of three singles matches that went three sets and also claimed the critical doubles point.
"Today was a hard-fought match by both teams, and we just came up short," UAB head coach Krissy Hall said.
Idaho's Victoria Lozano took down Giorgia Romeo by a score of 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 at the No. 1 singles position, and the Vandals' Natalie Kirch came from a set down to outlast Brittany DeFelice 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 6 spot. That pair of wins pushed Idaho over the top.
UAB's Jenny Cape won the other match that went three sets, also overcoming a first-set loss to defeat Alejandra Lozano 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
Evelien Strijker (No. 2) and Caroline Faught (No. 4) produced the other two victories for UAB with straight-set singles wins, while Barbara Maciocha (No. 3) accounted for the other Idaho point with a straight-set win over UAB's Paula Alvarez.
Idaho swept all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point early, meaning it needed only to split the six singles matches for the team win.
